May is Wildfire Awareness Month!

Wildfire Awareness Month

Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu has proclaimed May as Wildfire Awareness Month in Whatcom County.  You can find the official proclamation here:

Spring is the time to prepare for the upcoming warmer, drier summer months when the potential for wildfire increases.

Changing Conditions

Fire science experts have identified that wildfire risk is increasing in Western Washington.

Blowing Embers

The number one cause of home destruction in wildfires are blowing embers.

Home Ignition Zone

Research shows that homes ignite due to the condition of the home and everything around it, up to 200 feet from the foundation. This is called the Home Ignition Zone.

Roof Gutters

Resident Wildfire Safety Tip #1: Clear flammable debris from roof and gutters.

Resident Wildfire Safety Tip #2: Install 1/8” metal mesh screening over all vents except the dryer vent to keep out burning embers.

Non Flammable Zone

Resident Wildfire Safety Tip #3: Have a 5-foot wide non-flammable perimeter around the home.
