Summary of the 2017 Run with the Chums:

Over 200 parents, kids, volunteers, runners, walkers, grandparents, dog owners, and community members joined the Chums of Terrell Creek to celebrate Healthy Water, Healthy People on a beautiful Saturday in September.  The 5th Annual Run with the Chums 5k Fun Run/Walk was a huge success.

The event was special this year with two big changes to the already wonderful day.  The new race course provided improved accessibility by removing the large walk to the start area and lovely rolling hills to enjoy before a downhill run to the finish line.  The Cherry Point and Point Whitehorn area is used for farming, recreation, and provides habitat to owls, hawks, salmon, coyotes, raccoon, rodents and many more.  The lovely rolling course explored this habitat on a scenic loop through forests, along coastal bluffs and through farm lands.  Along the way informational signs guided the participants with water quality and conservation tips and information to ponder as they moved through this inspirational setting.

Additionally, the 1k smolt sprint included salmon specific obstacles this year for the kids to work around as they made their way from fresh water spawning grounds to the open ocean.  Large woody debris, cobbles and boulders as well as a culvert proved to challenge the young racers.  Every smolt sprinter got to wear a real race bib and received a ribbon for their efforts.  All racers were happy to wear their grey and gold Run with the Chums shirts donated by BP and Puget Sound Energy.

Ten organizations were represented at the Start/Finish line providing information on how to improve habitat and water quality by making small changes in our own lives to protect our valuable natural resources and our own health.

The organizations represented were:

Whatcom Conservation District:

Nooksack Salmon Enhancement:

Birch Bay Water and Sewer District:

Whatcom Marine Mammal Stranding Network:

WDFW, Lake Terrell Unit:

BP at Cherry Point:

Puget Sound Energy:

Kind words from past participants Run with the Chums:

“Thank you for a wonderful Saturday morning. My daughter and I along with her 3 little children participated. It was So much fun!  The kids had a blast.”  Terilyn Price

“Good Morning,  My husband and kids and I all ran the run on Saturday. It was a great event, thank you!”  Quenby Peterson

“Please send our "Thanks for the fun event!" to all involved.  I completed the 5K for my first time ever event, ran (really jogged) without stopping and enjoyed it very much.  Thank you very much”   Kim and Pat Martin

“Thank you, we did have a great time.  The weather was perfect and the crowd laid back.  I appreciated the 10am time as I came off shift that morn.  My daughter and I both ran the race and she beat me once again.  Darn them young kids.  My son was unable to join us but he keeps asking "Dad, do you want that shirt?"  It's a great design and a decent color, one of the few I'll wear.  Would you by any chance have another Mens Medium left over?  My "manboy" would certainly wear it."

"Either way, thanks for offering a fun and informational time.  Next year we'll bring more folks along with us.”  Cheers, Charlie Drury

"Great run, thank you for putting it together!!" Sydney Ratzlaf

Thanks to all the organizers and donors that make this amazing event happen!!
